PST backups causing problems

Hi all. I have two computers with the same problem. When I backup my
Outlook personal folders to a thumbdrive, it causes some issues. Now, every
time I open outlook, I get two dialog boxes. The first says "path not
found....." as if it's looking for the thumbdrive. When I click out of that,
a second box always comes up asking for a file location for opening files.
This didn't happen at first on either computer, but after backing up several
times, it suddenly took hold. Anyone know how to resolve it? I am wondering
if it has to do with the way the thumbdrive was released. Normally, I do a
"safely remove", but sometimes it gets hung up and I have to close the
application prior to removing the thumbdrive.

How do you back up your .PST file to your thumb drive?

Alias,

I use the "export to a file" route. I just tried to redo the backup and
waited for a sucessful "safely remove" (which I got), but the problem
persists.

Thanks,

Hi DL,

No, haven't done that. I just tried to re-backup the PST folders to the
thumbdrive and waited until I got a "OK to remove", but alas, it didn't solve
the problem. I am thinking I need to reload Outlook/Office (pain), but think
the problem will eventually come back.

Thanks,
Ugh

I just go to where the .pst file is, copy it, and paste it to my
external drive. Works fine. I have done this, reinstalled Office/Outlook
and then copied the back up .pst file to the new Windows install and
opened it with File/Open/Outlook Date File and then copied the mail,
contacts, etc. from the backed up file to the new, default file and then
closed the old file and everything runs fine.

Alias,

So, you gave up on the import/export function and use a workaround? That
sounds effective, but painful. I just tried a few more things, but am making
zero progress. If I can't resolve it, I'll go your route.

Thanks,
Ugh

No, I never used import/export. I have used this method with both OL
2000 and 2003 with no problems on various machines, various reinstalls,
etc. After I copy the .pst file to the external hard drive, I have never
had a problem with Remove Safely.

I've just seen your earlier post on how you backup.
Dont export, its the wrong method for native outlook data; with outlook
closed simply copy the data file(s) to your chosed location.
Or use the free Outlook backup addin available on MS Outlook site, of course
you would need to configure the backup location, within the tool. - the
other advantage with the tool being that it wont backup if the OL data file
is in use.
PS reinstalling OL is not going to cure any issue that a repair would'nt,
niether will it cure a currupt Profile.

DL,

Oh no! I've used the export function sucessfully for two years. I saw
alias's advice on the copy/paste route and did a search on explorer to find
*.pst file locations on the C drive, but I couldn't find any. Are they
called "pst" files originally? I originally got the export advice from MS
help, so I am surprised to hear you don't think that's the way to do it.
What do you mean by "native" files? The files I am copying are email
archives.

I appreciate your help!

Thanks Alias,

I solved the problem! Under "file" I chose "data file management" and saw
that I had a thumbdrive file showing together with the default C drive file.
I simply deleted the second file and voila, problem gone!

Thanks for your help. I very much appreciate it!

You need to search within hidden folders.

Native OL data means the outlook data file that you plan to restore to /
connect to Outlook
Export is best used for exporting to another file format.
I wont go into the list of settings/items that are lost in the export of a
data file to another.
