PST dilemma

Dave

I have a couple of PST files that were created before my hosted
exchange service went out of business. I'd like to simply open these
and be able to access them via Outlook 2001 or Entourage - or even
Outlook express. Since Outlook can no longer connect to the server, I
am unable to get the program running. It just quits saying that the
server cannot be located on the network. Do I have to hire another
hosting service just to get into these files?

Help!

Hi Dave!

You can open the PST files using Outlook 2001 without having to connect to
an Exchange server.

If you don't have a copy of Outlook 2001, you can download it from here
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/outlookformac/outlookformac.aspx?
pid=outlookformac

Once you have it on your machine, open Outlook Settings. This can be found
in a sub-folder of the Outlook 2001 folder.

The first tab you'll see will be "Services". Remove everything and then Add
a Personal Folder. Select your PST file as the personal folder.

Close Outlook Settings and launch Outlook 2001 and you should immediately
open to your messages in the PST file.

Although you can still view, copy & paste and print these messages, you
don't have any options for transferring them to another client or exporting
them.

Hope this helps! bill

I am also trying to open some PST files, so I downloaded Outlook 2001
and tried changing the settings. However, it will not save the new
settings unless the network connection test works.
Is there anyway around this?

Hi Hubert!

Somewhere in your Outlook 2001 folder you'll find the Outlook Settings
application. On first run, an alias will be placed into your Control Panels.

Open this and remove Exchange from the Services tab. You shouldn't be asked
to authenticate when this service is gone.

Hope this helps! bill

Thanks for the help so far. I found the alias in control panels and
removed the Exchange Server settings and was able to link the Personal
Folders settings to my PST file.

Sadly, while the connection problem is gone, but Outlook 2001 just
goes away right after the Outlook 2001 banner window comes up. No
error msg of any kind.

I am running OS 9.2.2 and have Office 2001 with SR-1 installed and
working. Outlook 2001 was installed after Office BTW.

Hi Hubert!

I'm not quite sure what is causing this problem, but you might try
temporarily trashing all Exchange preferences and folders from your /System
Folder/Preferences folder.

If this doesn't work, you can move your old files back and replace the newly
created ones.

Hope this helps! bill
