Can a Publisher XP file be saved as any format that can be
read by Adobe Illustrator? I don't want to buy Adobe just
to send a file to a printer who doesn't use Publisher...Thanks

Dave,

Rather than giving you advice that is true (there are lots of formats AI
can read) here's something that may be helpful: ask your printer what
formats he can and is willing to accept. You may find he'll accept and
be able to capably output files saved as various types from tif to
postscript.

A side benefit of working with a printer beforehand: they tend to care
more about your files than those dropped off. Some people will call
printers arrogant, I have always found even the mediocre ones to be
knowledgeable with a willingness to help clients achieve the best results.

There is no such thing as Publisher XP.
There is no issue sending any Publisher file to a printer.
Just convert it to PDF and give that to the printer.
If that printer does not have the capability to handle a PDF file, then that
printer is useless and hopeless like so many printers are. Then just find
another printer that handles PDF files.

Just find a printer that handles publisher. There are many Publisher Service
Providers out there. Find one local to you here:

IMO, a good printer should have, and be able to use, ALL the basics.
Publisher, Illustrator, InDesign, Quark, PageMaker, CorelDraw, Photoshop,
Paintshop, etc. A printer that doesn't have the basic doesn't want or
deserve your business.

A good designer should submit a file that a good printer does not need
to worry about - a pdf.

Why put the burden on the printer?
