Question Marks instead of filenames in Word 97

When I use File Open all I see is question marks (3) instead of filenames. If
I go to Save As, and then cancel, my File Open shows the filenames fine. Any
ideas of how to correct this? This has only started to happen recently, and I
am getting the files from a network (Windows NT 4 on the servers, Windows 98
on my computer).

You don't mention Word version, but see “OFF97: ‘I/O Error’ or Subfolders
