Quote mark problem

I just re-installed Word and I have to hit the space bar before I can se
quote marks. So I keep getting this "the cat sat,"he said.
How do I change this setting?

Do you have a non-U.S. keyboard layout selected? In Windows XP, this setting
is located in Start | Control Panel | Regional and Language Options |
Languages | Details | Settings | Keyboard.

It occured to me after I posted. It was US International keyboard causing my
strife. Well done to spot it.
