Reduce resource allocation upon completion of work

T

Tim Rice

I a novice user of Project and have previously used it to manage very simple
project with very few variables. I am currently using project to plan and
manage the production of equipment for a manufacturing company. You can
imagine this means that I have several task assigned to the same resource and
I need to pay close attention to the allocation of those resources.

What I'm trying to understand is why a resource is still allocated for work
that has been completed on a given task. For example, if I view the Resource
Graph, Work Chart, I can see the work allocated per resource. If I pick a day
that is completely allocated by a task, go back into the project and mark
that task complete, when I view the chart again that day is still showing
completely allocated. My goal is to be able to see how my resources are
allocated, based on task assigned, and for that to take into account the
amount of work that has been completed.

I may be completely off track with my understanding so any and all
help/comments will be very much appreciated.
I am using Project '07

Hi Tim,

Even if the task is complete, the resource was still scheduled to
work on the task and is still allocated to that task.

You can see the amount of originally scheduled work by saving a
baseline and viewing Baseline work. The amount of work completed is
Actual Work and the amount of work not yet completed is remaining
work. If an assigned was completed and required either more or less
work than originally scheduled you can view work variance.

You can apply the work table to task views (Gantt chart), resource
views (Resource Sheet) or either the Task Usage view (to view Tasks
and assignments) or the Resource Usage view (to view resources and
assignments).

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
