Resource Graph (Master vs. Consolidated)

Hadi

I use the master file in MS Project 2 ways, sometimes I will have a common
resource pool between all the files and then when I click to open the
resoruce pool I just click on third radial button to open a master project
with the subfiles. it looks fine and i can see all of my resource histograms
and everything. However, when I try to do the master through the
consolidated methold, i.e I just insert all of my files and delink them from
the master. I also will get the resrouce histograms but the hours and much
less using the second method than the first one.

help is always appreciated

Hadi,
Do you perhaps also have resources on the Resource Sheets of each
subproject? Without knowing exactly how you have all the resources set
up and assigned/shared, it is a little hard to tell what may be
happening.

I also note that in your second method, you unlink the subprojects from
the master. Why?

I just want to have a consolidated master file instead of the linked ones. I
have 25 files with the same resources on each one of them. when I do the
consolidated method project is supposed to sync up the resources and not
duplicate it.

Basically, i create a master file for managers to look at without having to
worry about them changing any of the data

Hadi,
OK, I understand your need to have an statically consolidated master
(i.e. unlinked).

As a test I took a couple of files, each with their own individual
resources (some of them common) and built a dynamic master and a static
master. When I look at the Resource Graph, it gives the same number of
hours for each resource in either master. Either version of master also
shows the correct combined resource hours in the timescaled data when
viewed in the Resource Usage view. The only glitch I see is that for
some reason in the static master, the total hours for each resource is
shown as "0" which is of course incorrect. Is that the discrepancy you
are talking about?

Not at all, both of the static and dynamic masters have total hours for their
resources but they are just different.

Hadi,
OK, well obviously I didn't emulate the same structure you are using.
Would it be possible to send me your files via e-mail? I wouldn't need
all 25, just enough to demonstrate what you are seeing. If your files
have sensitive data you can go to fellow MVP, Jack Dahlgren's website at:
http://masamiki.com/project/macros.htm
and use his macro called "scrub", or I can send you a macro that does a
similar thing but goes into a little more depth with sanitizing. Neither
macro will change the Work field, which is the relevant item in your
issue. If you do send the files, be sure to zip them before sending.

Hadi,
My e-mail is in the header but perhaps that doesn't show on your
newsreader. Send them to:
mjensenatattheriverdotdotcom
remove obvious redundancies.
