resource leveling problem

I have a set of tasks that are spread out over a duration that is longer than
the work. The sum of the work for all of the tasks is less than the
available resources. Project is telling me that the resources are
overallocated, and it is unable to level them.

In the gantt chart view I set the task types to fixed duration and turned
off the effort driven check box. In the task usage view I set the work
required for each task, which in most cases is much less than the task
duration. I've checked this by hand and it should be able to level the
resources...but it doesn't.

Hello RichKene,

It sounds as though you may have overallocated resources on a single
task. One of the downsides of working with Fixed Duration tasks is
that you can have a resource's assignment units above the max. unit
fairly easily.

Have you looked at the Resource Allocation view and moved through the
overallocations to view when and where the problems are? Turn on the
Resource Management toolbar, click the Resource Allocation view button
and then use the Go to Next Overallocation. That should help you
track down what is causing the overallocation as well as help you
determine whether you really do need to fix it.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
