Resource Overallocation Calculation

How is resource overallocation calculated? What is the maximum percentage
amount of tasks that a resource can be assigned to (out of all the tasks for
the entire project) for MS Project to consider that resource to be
overallocated?

The problem that is happening is that I have one resource that has many
tasks assigned (without overlapping durations) and it seems like just because
the resource is scheduled a number of tasks MS Project is considering the
resource to be overallocated.

Any explanation would help.....thanks!!

Hi mek,

A resource is overallocated according to Project when their Peak Units
(sum of assignment units) exceeds their maximum units for a single
minute in the project file.

Usually this occurs because a resource is assigned to multiple tasks
that overlap in time. However, a resource may also be overallocated if
he/she is assigned to a single task above his/her maximum units.

For example:
Joe's max. units are 100%
You have assigned Joe to two tasks at 100%
Task A which starts on 11 October at 8:00 am and finishes on 11 October
at 10:00 am
Task B which starts on 11 October at 9:45 am and finishes on 11 October
at 12:00 pm

Joe's Peak units from 9:45 am to 10:00 am are 200% -- which is greater
than his max. units of 100%. Joe is overallocated.

On another task you have Sue assigned at 101% to a task. Sue's max.
units are 100% -- Sue is also overallocated.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Am posting a link from this group which had a larger thread throwing
more light on this topic. There was also one more post within the last
minute which was answered by one of the MVPs giving an extremely
logical reason about the resource allocation business but am unable to
get that thread.
