Resource Usage and tasks

Firstly I must mention that I'm pretty new to Microsoft Project so my
questions might show a completely wrong thinking! I have a parent summary and
a lot of child tasks which can be done at any time before a deadline. I've
set this up ok. I've assigned a resource at 20% (1 day a week) for the task
whose duration is 4 days. What I want is the task to now last 4 calendar
weeks on the Gantt chart - is this possible?
TIA,

OK - I think I understand now. The task duration isn't the no man days to
complete a task. This doesn't seem available, or at least must be derived. If
the duration is deleted and the start and end dates specified, the duration
will update automatically, even though the resource usage might be < 100%.
So, the task duration * total resource % will determine the man days
required. Pity tis isn't displayed somewhere though.

Hi Paul,

Do note that there is a very important field you did not mention: WORK
Indeed, duration is a measurement of elapsed time, never ever of mandays -
those are measured by Work
To achieve what you want, one of two ways
- Insert Column, Work
- Enter work dat for the task (in this case, 32 hrs)
- Only now assign the resoruce @ 20%: duration will be recalculated

Or
Window, Split
In the upper pane select teh task
In the lower pane, enter the work and the unitswith the resource name
Click OK
