Rollups on Usage Views

I'd like to be able to roll up the tasks on the resource usage view when
using a combination view of the Resource Graph on top and the Resource Usage
below. Despite attempting to use filters and edit views and tables I can't
seem to make that happen. Is this possible? Any ideas appreciated.

The resouce graph in the top pane shows a total number of hours/dolars for
that time period at the very bottom. Would that be sufficeint?

Not really, what I'm looking for is the total hours for major components of
our cycle... such as the total for requirements, total for development, etc.
all of which have many tasks underneath them. That would be the equivalent of
rolling up the individual hours to an outline level above the individual
tasks.
