"Save as"

Bill

In Word XP all of a sudden "Save As" disappeared from the "file"
button submenu. This is very inconvenient if a document should be
saved in some place other than, or in addition to, the default
location of document files.

I tried reinstalling and repairing Word, but that doesn't fix the
problem.

Any ideas what happened and how to get "Save As" back in play?

Thanks, Bill

you should still have the save as option under the toolbar at the top of
word. If not its the standard toolbar and you can add it by, VIEW / TOOLBARs
select Standard toolbar. I am trying to find out why its not in your file
drop down menu. WEIRD! might have to add something in your REGISTRY.

I know that in Word 2000, the default settings include "Show recently
used commands first" with a (really clumsy access to the others) - and
a damn nuisance as far as I'm concerned! So if you hadn't used a menu
item "recently" (as determined by Word), it would seem to disappear.
You can change this behaviour in W2000 by selecting
Tools->Customize->Options, uncheck "Show recently used commands
first", then Close.

This may not be the case with XP, but it might be worth a try! If
that doesn't work, the keyboard shortcuts ALT+F, A or F12 should do
the trick.

First, like Hilary suggested, make sure it's not the "hide just the
command I'm looking for" so-called "feature" kicking in. In XP, I
believe you need to *check* the top two boxes on the Options tab of
the Customize dialog (which is the opposite of Word 2000, where you
want to *un*check the boxes).

If that's not it, try resetting your menu bar. Still in the Customize
window, go to the Toolbars tab and select Menu Bar in the list. Click
the Reset button, then OK (or is it Yes?) to confirm.

As a last resort, you can try renaming Normal.dot, then starting up
Word again. All of your customizations will be lost, but if your Save
As command is back, you'll know that the cause of the problem was a
corrupt template. (The most reliable way to find Normal.dot is to
search for it using Windows Explorer. The folder where it's located is
hidden by default, so if searching doesn't find it, go to Tools ->
Folder Options -> View and tell it to show hidden files and folders.)
