Save command changes unopened files.

When I make a small change to a file, the change occurs to similar but unopened files. File names are different but the structure/layout of the text within the file is very similar. It is maddening. Can anyone explain what is going on? I am using Word 2000.

You are probably using Normal.dot as your main styling template and or
have Auto Update doc styles on and or have styles defined to be auto
update.

These features cause similar behaviour. You should be using your own
custom template, your own style definitions, styling everything and
not auto-updating. You can 'update' a document by using Tools >
Templates and Addins.. > Organizer
