saved work changed to unreadable characters

The format on one of my papers has changed while working on it. instead of words it now shows rectangles, and numbers..
help needed asa
very urgent.

Hi AA

In the File > Open dialog box, make sure the "Files of type" box says "Word
Documents" or "All Word Documents".
