Saving a pub file to PDF

B

billb

Am using the 2007 beta office 2. After the technical refresh, I could no
longer save my file in a PDF format. Did download the pdf add in from
microsoft but now publisher says it cannot save the file. Anybody else with
this problem and do you have a work around?
Thanks

Thank you. Is there a way to save to pdf with the technical refresh?

There was, as there was a version of the PDF add-in designed for the
technical refresh. As the product has now released, I believe that has
been withdrawn.

Search for one of the many free/low cost .pdf creating software applications
that are available. You'll have to "print" to a .pdf file instead of save to
one but I don't see that as a big issue.

That's because the current add-in was designed for the released version,
not
the beta.

I am using publisher 2007 full version. Nightmares with the installation,
installing and uninstalling and hours on the phone today to get it
operational finally. Now, it no longer allows me to use my pdf program.
Microsoft says pdf995 is a good program but it creates scrap on my computer
just like the program I already have. What happened here and why does
publisher interfere with this?

I successfully downloaded and installed the referenced PDF|XML listed
below and relaunched Publisher 2007. Clicking on the Tools|Add-ins menu
reveals an empty executable files box?

What am I not doing?

Tools, Add-ins...
Is the PDF plug-in listed? Do you get an error at all?
Troubleshooting - first thing we always ask people to do is to print preview and
print the publication. If this fails then we kind of expect going to PDF to
fail. (We would then want to understand why printing is failing, but this puts
us into the familiar print troubleshooting mode - check drivers, etc.)

If printing succeeds and PDF export fails, then we are interested in seeing the
file.
Can you write a short message to explain your problem to the Publisher
development team and attach your file?

The site still talks about beta feedback (we really should update that), but we
do monitor it and this is still the best channel for bug reports and
attachments.

It would be so much easier if you just downloaded PrimoPDF and then you can
make anything you can see on your screen a .pdf.

Personally I don't see why everyone is so psyched about being able to create
a .pdf from any Office file. I want the ability to turn *everything* into
one. I have confirmation pages for online purchases and even the
authorization number generated by my bank when I use online bill paying.
That way I have proof right then and there that a payment was issued, etc.
The add-in can't do that.

Lots of reasons:
a) The PDF output isn't adversely affected by bugs in the printing
system (think transparent gradients)
b) Hyperlinks, etc., work (without having to have the full link address
in the document, or recreate them manually).
c) OpenOffice.org has had it for ages, and advocates of it have pointed
that as an advantage of their platform.
d) Fewer places for things to go wrong.
e) PDFs generated through Office are (according to discussions in the
Coffeehouse) tagged for accessibility; PDFs generated using the free
add-ins aren't normally.

Adobe's PDFMaker add-in doesn't have most of these problems, but is
rather unreliable and prone to causing application instability.

The Save As PDF And XPS Add-in is not a COM Add-in, and so does not show
up in Tools > Add-ins. Once it is installed you should see "Publish as
PDF or XPS" in your File menu.

Tools|Add-ins is still blank even after a second install (also
apparently successful) of the PDF|XML plug-in. No errors listed either.

HOWEVER, I now see that "Publish as PDF or XPS" does appear in the File
menu and does work?!

BTW, the XPS format intrigues me -- I'd love to see some competition for
Adobe on this front being a throwback user of a pre-Acrobat product put
out by WordPerfect eons ago called Envoy -- but I am unable to view the
publication, at least in my default Firefox 2.0 viewer. A Google search
for a XPS viewer points to lots of Vista opportunities but few WindowsXP
possibilities.

Remind me to knock to wood. *So far* I've had no issues with .pdf files made
with Primo or Acrobat. I am excluding the fact that Acrobat v8 doesn't work
with Vista/Office 2007 right now. I understand why and can patiently wait
till it's patched in a short while.

I wouldn't bother waiting for Acrobat 8 to get around to it. The XPS/PDF
filter that Microsoft has works great for Office 2007 files. I'm having my
customers and their clients switch to that as long as they keep everything
RGB. Primo isn't so bad, but the PDF/XPS plug-in just works perfectly well
as anything else.
