saving and opening files

I recently downloaded "needed" updates for my Microsoft Office 2003. But now,
saving and opening files are not the same. And a lot of them will not let me
reopen them after I've finished them? Any ideas of how I can get my MS office
to work like it did before the updates. I don't remember the downloads I had
done but I wish I never would have done them now.
