Saving data after unprotecting a form

I have a form that I use to key a large amount of data. Part way through the data entry process, I discovered an error on the form. How do I unprotect the form, correct the form error, and still save the data? Reprotecting the form destroys the original data, and set the form back to a "no data entered" state.
