scheduling resources

When I’m scheduling resources, I prefer to use Fixed Duration so that I can
say how long a task is and then assign the percent effort for the various
resources. I also Click Effort driven dialog box. This works fine if I put in
all the resources correctly the first time. But if I choose to add one later
at anything OTHER than 100%, I get the following error: “Project cannot
create an assignment with a specific unit value on a fixed duration,
effort-driven task. Once the assignment is created, you can edit the unit
value on the assignmentâ€

So I have to add the new resource at 100% and come back and edit it again.
The problem is that it recalculates the other resources effort% when I add
the new resources at 100%. So I have to re-enter ALL of the resources %
effort. This work around is very frustrating.

Is there a better way?

Sounds like you really don't want to use Effort Driven scheduling on the
task, because by definition this will adjust the units of the other
assignments in order to keep the total effort constant as additional
resources are assigned. Uncheck the effort driven option and it should
behave how you are expecting.
