Section numbers in StyleRef fields while using AutoNumLgl section numbering?

I'm trying to find a method that will include the section numbers (Heading
1, 2 and 3) in my StyleRef fields for each page of my document. Currently,
I use 3 type of headers. Each new chapter (section) starts on odd-pages
with the first page having a blank header and then the following odd/even
pages have mirror image headers (page number on one side with the StyleRef
"Heading 1" on odd pages and StyleRef "Heading 2" on even pages. My problem
is that I need to have the section number included with "Heading 2". I'm
using the Outline Form with the main chapters using heading level 1-3 and
the appendices using heading level 7-9.

Hi ken

Are the field code options to 'include paragraph numbers' (\n or \w
switches) not working for you?

What version of Word are you using? How are you numbering your sections?

Thanks for that help. I looked at the field code options for StyleRef and
didn't realize the '\n or '\w switch would do what I wanted. Or close to
what I was looking for.

I'm using Office 2K and I'm using the Outline Numbering w\ a customized
numbered list. What should I expect when using the '\n or '\w option? As
far as I can tell, they are the same. Is that correct? Since my headings
are numbered "1.1." or "A.1." I would except the StyleRef "Heading 2" \n
would generate "1.1." but I get "1.1". The missing "." after the second
digit is missing

TIA,
