Hi Jack,
Thanks for replying. I have Word 2003 with all the latest updates. The
problem occurs only on one computer, an IBM ThinkPad, but not on any other
machine in my house. The sequence is this: click on Insert, then Object,
then Create From File. I double click on the file (it is a BMP file of my
signature) and I see an icon on the Word screen, but not my signature.
Needless to say, the Display As Icon button is not checked off. On the other
hand, if I click on Insert, then Picture, and then get the signature file, it
shows on the screen correctly. Why does it work when choosing Picture, but
not when choosing Object? On the six other computers in house, both work
correctly.
As a general rule, you should NOT use Insert/Object to insert graphics.
Normally, graphics are inserted using the appropriate filter, via
Insert/Picture/From file.
Inserting a picture as an OBJECT embeds it as an OLE object, which will increase
file size tremendously, as elements of the application (program) registered as
the appropriate OLE Server (application in which the object is created/edited -
Word for a Word doc; Excel for a workbook, for example). In the case of this one
machine, probably no valid OLE Server application has been associated with the
bitmap file type. Or you have some kind of management software (perhaps
anti-virus) that for security reasons not allowing the OLE Server to manifest.
