Set a base line for a project

Can anyone tell me if I can import a baseline start date from excel into a
new project? The best I can figure out is that Project does not set a
baseline by the date in the start baseline column. It only assigns a base
line by taking a snap shot of the project when you execute the set baseline
comand. Is this true?

Hi,

Yes, BaselineStart is an editable field.
You can write or paste in it.

Hi Tony,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Yes, but why would you want to import a baseline? Why not use the
Adjust_Dates macro on the Analysis toolbar to adjust the start date and then
baseline when you're satisfied?

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Mike,
It's a real strange situation. I am working with FEMA and we are attempting
to develop a process for tracking a "Project Worksheet" within MS Project. I
can not work in a traditional manner by planning the project first. I can't
do anything until I receive data about the worksheet. We are more or less
just tracking the process. I have tried to merge a baseline start date but I
don't end up with any baseline. I did this by creating a column in my excel
data sheet named "Baseline Start" and when mapping it I mapped it to
"Baseline Start". This did not produce a baseline? Help!

Hmmmmm... Don't know. I suspect that Project cannot produce a baseline
with just the start dates - it's got to get the finish date from somewhere.
Any way, try importing the start an finish dates and then run the baseline.

Mike,
I got it to work. I creadted 3 columbs in my excel work sheet and named
them, "Baseline Start", "Baseline Finish", and "Baseline Duration", all of
which Project recognizes as a column. Now I get a baseline when I import the
data.
Thanks
