Sharing publisher files over network

J

Jason

I recently purchased the Microsoft MN-820 wireless
package for my home PC's. I am having a strange problem
where for some reason I am unable to open MS Publisher
files over my home network. All other types of files
work fine (i.e. excel, acrobat, word, etc...), but the
publisher files give me an error message saying
"file is locked because it is currently being used
by another program. Please close the other program
and then try opening or importing the file again."
The problem is that there is no other program open on any
other computer. I also cannot access these files to copy
and paste them from one machine to another. I have tried
rebuilding both machines, which temporarily resolved the
issue, but it is beginning to happen again...Any ideas or
help would be much appreciated... Thanks

I am running MS publisher 2000

You cannot use Publisher files over a network, as Publisher files are in no
way network friendly.

The Publisher files *MUST* reside and be used on the local hard drive only.

If you do use Publisher files over a network, you will have corruption file
problems.

Don while they may work in the interim on your computer, you will guarantee
end up with file corruption.

In general, running files over a network is not the right way to go with any
application, whether it costs $1200 (Quark) or $200 (MSPub).

At some point you will have corrupted files. And you can count on this
happening...tomorrow, next week, next month...usually when it's at the last
possible minute where such failure costs the most.

The only preventive is to run from your local drive.

I appreciate the response... I would love to run the
files locally, the only problem is that the files are
locked and cannot be accessed to run or copy... I can
copy the files from the host computer to computer 2, but
that defeats the purpose of accessing the files remotely
(i.e. from my other computer)... I may just be out of
luck... Thanks again for the responses...

You do not need to open the files to copy them. Simply drag between two
Windows Explorer windows.
I can
copy the files from the host computer to computer 2,
You just said you couldn't!
but that defeats the purpose of accessing the
files remotely
No it doesn't. You can copy the files across, modify them, then copy them
back again. A couple of 10-second extra stages that will allow you to use
the files on both machines and avoid file corruption.
