sorting within a task by ascending order

I'm new at project. When I tried to sort some subtasks by
ascending date the whole spreadsheet sorted. I got out of
it but was wondering how to sort only within the task. I
somehow think it may have been related to my shading only
the tasks and not the entire rows.

Sorting applies to the entire project.
If you want a specific sort order use one of the user defined fields (Text1
for example) to enter the desired order, then sort by that field

If there aren't too many subtasks, it might be quicker to
just drag them where you want them.
Click the row number to select the task.
Release the mouse button, then
Drag (hold down the left mouse button) the row number to
where you want it.

You can drag several rows at a time.
