Specify how task progress is shown in relation to the status date

I am using Project 2003 and am trying to adjust the way task progress is
shown in using the options described in Help and Online at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/project/HP430082591033.aspx?pid=CH010426671033.
However, I must be doing something wrong because no matter what I do with
status date, actual start, % complete, actual and remaining duration nothing
changes !! Do you have any suggestions as to other settings that may be
preventing this functionality from working.
