How do I stop the stupid Tempalte Help Pane and the Shapes Pane from always
showing when ever I open a file? It is so aggrevating because they take up so
much space. I have looked in options and Customize and nothing I can find
helps.

Tools -> Options ->
(Getting Started Screen) or (Startup Task Pane)
depending upon your version of Visio.

I unchecked that box already but it still keeps showing up. Is it possible
that those settings are hard coded into each project?

and there may also be a 'Show Drawing Type Pane' option too. Untick
that.

The Shapes Window is always shown and cannot be turned off permanently.
