Status Change since last update??

Does anyone on the newsgroup have ideas/pointers as to how best to manage
the presentation of information to show both current status against schedule
and change since the last update in graphical format? I am quite comfortable
in defining and using Enterprise Task and Project fields to display
variances graphically and using these in custom Project and Project Centre
views created in Project Web Access.

I am able to to show graphical indicators showing the change in the last
reporting period by copying and pasting values to custom fields prefixed
"previous" and then updating project plans and using another custom field
with a formula (Previous - Current) with the result displayed as a Graphical
indicator, a Green + sign for improvements, a yellow diamond for no change
and a Red - sign for deterioration. This approach works fine but for such a
sophisticated tool surely there must be some way to calculate such values
without having to resort to the crude solution of cutting & pasting?

As an aside I would also like to be able to use Acronyms to describe Custom
Enterprise fields when displaying grpahical indicators in PWA views and have
the "ScreenTip" display the full text, is this possible? The reason for this
request is that if columns display graphical indicators frequently the
column headings cause the column to be much wider than needed, taking up
valuable screen "real estate".
