Strange wide Vertical Bars in MS Word

I'm getting strange wide vertical bars in MS Word 97 using XP when I
type quotation marks. Does anyone know what this is caused by?

What printer is selected in File=>Print and what font are you using?
Is the language for that text set as English(U.S.) or???
