SUmmary tasks do not start when the first child task starts

My MSP is playing tricks on me. All my summary tasks appear to start at the
PROJECT START DATE. Even when the tasks underneath the summary tasks start
later, the summary task does not adopt that start date, it stays fixed at the
project start date (which makes the daycount wrong). The end date of the
summary task adjusts, though. What is going on ? thks

That's not normal behaviour. If you press F9 does that change the situation?
If so select Tools, Options and under the calculation tab select automatic.
