Table of contents

Is anyone aware of a solution for the problem where table of contents shows
all page numbers as 0 (or sometimes 4 or any other number, but the right
one). By updating the toc it sometimes corrects it but then when you try to
print, do print preview or pdf conversion the problem re-appears.
This seems to be specific to Word XP, as I have put it right using Word
2000 - but it goes wrong again on the XP system....

Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks
Belinda

Hi Belinda

I'm not familiar with Word XP, but I find that Word 2000 is spectacularly
bad at inserting tables of contents if you let it do it the way it wants to.
My guess is that XP is even worse in this respect.

I teach a course in advanced word processing in which I spend a sizeable
chunk of time talking about how to manually insert TOC fields. I find that
this gives much more control over TOCs than the methods that Word tries to
use if you just tell it to insert a table of contents via the menus. I would
strongly recommend that you manually insert a field (Ctrl + F9) and then
type the appropriate TOC field codes into it. These are reasonably well
described in the help files, but a code that works well 90% of the time is
{TOC \o "1-3"}

As I say, I'm not familiar with your specific problem, but my approach
solves about 98% of all the TOC problems I've ever come across in Word 2000,
so it's worth a go.

Regards
