Task duration

I am having a problem with changing durations. I have sub-tasks that add up
to 50 hours. Only one employee (resource) is completing this task and he is
on a standard schedule. I specified 50 hours for the entire task, but when I
add the sub-tasks, the task duration goes down to two days.

The same thing is happening with every task that has a sub-task. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Summary task durations are not the simple sum of their subtasks' durations,
nor the sum of the subtask work either. A summary task duration extends
from the time work begins on the earliest subtask until the time it ends on
the latest subtask. If we had 100 subtasks of 1 day duration and 100 people
to work on them so they could all happen at the same time, the summary task
duration would be 1 day, not 100 days. OTOH if we had two 1-day tasks
linked FS, the same guy on each, and he takes 2 weeks vacation between them,
the summary task duration would be 12 days, not 2 days. It is only equal to
the sum of the subtasks when they happen to all be in direct sequence.
Also, summary task duration are never something that you can input
directly - they are always calculated and if you have entered something in
the duration before indenting its children, your entry will be always
overriden by the calculated value.
