Text is not pasted into Publisher

When I "paste" text that has been "copy"-ed from Word, the number 2 is pasted
- not the text I want to paste. I've cleared the clipboard and tried again
but each time I paste, just the number 2 is pasted. I have tried copying
text from a different Word file but get the same result. Any ideas as to why
this happens?

Might do a "detect & repair" found under help.
What version Office are you using?
Does this occur when you "paste special?"
Does text paste correctly into Word from Publisher?

Word is from Students/Teachers version 2003 (Publisher is from Standard
Office version 2002).
I have discovered that if I close Publisher and then reopen, I am able to
copy/paste okay for awhile but then later, something else gets "stuck" in the
clipboard (even though I've cleared it) and that's the only thing I can
paste.
Right now things are working okay so I'm not able to see if "Paste Special"
will work when "paste" does not. Also, right now I am able to copy from
Publisher to Word - I didn't try that when things were not working correctly.
I'll look into the "detect and repair"

No version of Office Standard has ever come with Publisher.

Only the Special Edition Office XP Professional came with Publisher 2002
(unless you count OEM versions).

My mistake, Publisher came preloaded (OEM) on my PC with Office XP Small
Business Version 2002.

Go to Edit > Paste Special > Paste as Unformatted Text.
