To many files on server

I do digital photography so I have tons of files on my site. My web host says I am over my limit for # of files because Frontpage makes copies of almost every file for ref. These are in the _vti_cfn directories. Are these files needed? Why is Frontpage creating so many files? They are only 1k but it is still a file. I have 2 years worth of shows that I have photographed, and have about 15000 pictures online. There are ref. files for the thumnails, webpages and pictures, 15000 * 3 just to get started. If I can't solve this I am going to have to switch away from Frontpage.

They are not copies of files, but pointers to files.
They are what FrontPage uses to maintain it's inventory of your site and it's database of what page
links to what files, time of last update and much more.

Yes they are needed and *do not* delete them. If you do you will not be able to manage or update
your site with FrontPage.

If your host supports subwebs, you could move your pictures and thumbnails
into a new folder, then convert the folder to a subweb. The subweb can be
maintained using FTP (since the contents is all pictures), and all the
_vti_cnf folders in it may then be deleted (but NOT any other _vti*
folders). There are caveats:

You cannot open the subweb in FrontPage again.

If you rename, or move a picture the link to it will not be maintained by
FrontPage.

All links to new pictures placed in the subweb must be set up and
maintained by hand - FrontPage cannot maintain them.

The files in _vti_cnt folders aren't copies of your
picture files,

Even though the files in _vti_cnt folders have the same
names as your picture files, they're actually text files
in which FrontPage about the real file. So, for example,
images/_fti_cnf/hippos.jpg is a text files that contains
information about images/hippos.jpg.

FrontPage needs these files, and you shouldn't delete
them.

I guess I don't understand the issue.

o Is your Web host unwilling to sell you a bigger file
quota?
o Are you unwilling to pay for a bigger file quota?
o Are you encountering some other problem, such a
excessive publishing times or timeouts?

In the first two cases, maybe it's time to look for a
host that's capable of handling a size the size of yours.

In the third case, the answer is usually to divide the
single site (or the few large sites) unto multiple
subsites. For example, you could segregate the photos by
year, by subject, by photographer, or any other
attribute.

Your host *is* running the FrontPage server extensions,
right?

Also, I could give better advice if I could look at the
site. What's the URL?
