turning off email alerts for past completed tasks

Is it possible to turn off email alerts for scheduled tasks which have been
completed and are now past. eg when a schedule is published and contains
resource assignments, emails are sent to those resources informing them of
their tasks. Where these tasks are in the past people still get these alerts.

Is there any way to 'turn off' alerts for these tasks?

Don't publish completed tasks? Or do you also get the reminders on
saving the plan?
