Two problems with using outlook and Word

N

news.microsoft.com

Does anyone know why it is that when I open an email in Outlook which comes
in as an HTML doc, and try to respond to it, the format of the response
converts it to a txt format in a hideous courier font? Which cannot be
converted into HTML because the option is grayed out?

Is this in some way related to the reason why I cannot now respond to emails
without getting a warning that something is trying to access Microsoft Word
and should I allow it and if so for how long? Whatever option I try, the
result is the same, either Word opens as it should, as Word seems to open as
this TXT version with the ugly courier font.

Hi, fountainpen,

You don't mention what version of Outlook or Word you are using, but (in
Outlook 2003) you can set your compose options in Tools | Options | Mail
Format. See if changing settings in there resolves the matter.

No, those settings are all correct and none of them point to any ugly
courier font or any reason why I shouldn't be able to respond to some (not
all) messages in anything other than a Plain Text format while working in
Microsoft Word. (I know it is using Word because it auto-corrects which
Outlook Express doesn't do and it does things like auto-capitalisation and
month-finishing) It is Outlook 2002, 10.6515.6735, SP3 with all updates
turned on, Word is 2002 10.6764.6735, SP3 as well and I have tried
repairing the Office installation from original Office install discs
provided by Microsoft. Are there any other N/Gs where someone might know
the answer or be able to do something I have never been able to do, - search
EFFECTIVELY through the Microsoft knowledge base?

Or might this be somehting to do with a recent MicrosoftUpdate patch? Or
would it be a known problem by now if it were?

Is it on all replies, no matter the sender? Do new messages from you
display appropriately (not in plain text)? And it wasn't always this way?

In your Tools | Options in Outlook, in the Mail Format tab, do you have the
checkboxes for using Word as your e-mail editor checked? (I'm assuming
yes). What happens if you uncheck those and try a reply? Does that resolve
both matters (though not allowing you to use Word as your editor).

Is the error message that "a program is trying to access e-mail
addresses..."? or something else?

Do you happen to have Word 2000 installed, as well? Do you use Norton
AntiVirus?

You might also try re-generating the email.dot file that Word uses as the
default template:

1. Click Start, and then click Search.
2. Click All files and folders.
3. Type email.dot in the All or part of the file name box.
4. Click Search.
5. After the file is found, right-click Email.dot, and then click Rename.
6. Type old_email.dot, and then press ENTER.
7. Close the Search window.
8. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl in the Open box, and then click
OK.
9. In the Currently installed programs list, click your version of Microsoft
Office XP, and then click Change.
10. On the Maintenance Mode Options screen, click Repair Office, and then
click Next.
11. On the Reinstall or Repair Office installation screen, click Detect and
Repair errors in my Office installation.
12. Click to select the Restore my Start Menu Shortcuts check box, and then
click Install.
13. Click OK when the installation has completed successfully.

Any luck there?
