Un-deletable return after a table

M

Margaret

The second-to-last page of my document has a table in it,
with no returns after the table.

The last page of my document has nothing on it, only a
single return. I want to get rid of this blank last page.

I can highlight the return, and place my cursor before or
after it, but I cannot delete it.

I have already adjusted the lower margin of the second-to-
last page, to no avail. I have also reduced line spacing
in the table on the second-to-last page, but that didn't
work either.

All suggestions gratefully accepted!

Word insists on having a text paragraph, even if empty, below a table at the
end of a document. That's because the final paragraph mark in a document
stores the document/section-level formatting. The end-of-table marker cannot
store this information because it holds the formatting for the table. So you
cannot eliminate this paragraph mark, but you can hide it. Sometimes it is
enough to format it as 1 pt (either font size or paragraph spacing). If that
does not suffice, then select it and format it as Hidden. You'll still see
the extra page unless you hide nonprinting characters, but it will not
print.

Hi Margaret,

You cannot delete the return after a table. A table must always be followed
by a return.

Make sure that the last return's paragraph attributes are set to no-space
after and that it is not set to Page break before. Also, make sure the font
size is small, sometimes I have to resort to setting the font size to 1 so
that it will not flow over to a new page. If all that fails, set the
return's font attribut to Hidden. This way it won't print (unless you
checked the check box for printing hidden text in the print options, of
course!).

HTH
Cheers!
