Unable to access PWA from remote machines

Nitinn Gokhle

I am able to connect to pwa on the local host machine but unable to connect
to pwa from other remote machines. I can ping the Server by IP from the
remote machines. I do get the login screen but once I enter in the
credentials I just get a google search screen saying "Oops! the link appears
to have been broken" with the url showing
http://<servername>/_layouts/AccessDenied.aspx?Source=%2f. Please help.

That you are getting a logon screen indicates that your system is not
installed correctly. A good place to start with these types of questions is
to specify the version of the software you are working with. Next try to
describe your setup so we have something to go on, otherwise the best we can
do is tell you that the system is broken when you say it doesn't work.

may also want to let us know if the remote machine uses DNS server to resolve
the IIS site (check IIS site headers) and state if you are using AD for
identity management (in which case I'd asume your workstation/virtual PC is a
domain member).

Usually I woud not expect to see SharePoint logon form/site unless you are
publising it via ISA or alike services to non-domain \ public users.

Thanks Gary and Vaso for replying.

My setup is I have installed PS2K7 with WSS on a server machine on a
registered network. My client with MS P2K7 is on a laptop with wireless
connectivity. I am using Windows Authentication for identity management. Both
my machines are using preferred DNS and Alt DNS server settings. I hope this
information is sufficient for you.
FYI...When both my machines are on LAN I have no issues of this type. I can
play around the PS2K7 without any problems. I can access the PWA site,
perform backups, restore, provide access , etc... Accessing the server
through internet is my only issue. Please let me know if there is any setting
which is important for internet connectivity to be checked from my side ?

hi,
some more info abt my setup -
my servers ip address is registered on net whereas my laptop's ip address is
kept on 'obtain an ip address automatically'. My entire setup is on one
server - front-end, Middle and DB. I am using SQL 2005 DB server.

Gary:

Yes you are correct I have not setup alternate access mapping in SharePoint
for this site collection. I will set it up and let you know tommorrow.
Thanks...

Note: In case you are hosting project workspaces in a different site
collection/site, you will need to set mappings for that as well. Since not
using proxy server for publishing, strongly recommend use https...

Gary:

I went to the Alternate access mappings and Added a internal URL as
http://<servername>:81 and selected zone as 'Internet'. So I had 2 Internal
URLs
one URL which was created earlier with a 'default' Zone at port 80 during
the PWA Application creation (this is the url which I used on LAN and works
fine) and the other one which I created with Internet zone.

Now I am not able to proceed as I am not able to change the Public URL of
the default Zone Internal URL...That's where I got stuck. Please help...am I
on the right track??

Nitinn:

Have you looked at the documentation available on TechNet for using
alternate access mapping with SharePoint? If not, access that reference
first, and ask specific questions if you get stuck. I believe that there are
also some articles specific to Project Server using AAM as well.

Yes, I did go through the content on technet. Icould not make out the
sequence of activities to be performed for setting up Alternate access
mappings. That is where i got stuck.

Try starting here:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Search/en-US/?query=project server alternate access mapping&ac=1

The news groups are designed to help you over specific issues and doesn't
work very well as a training platform. You need to get through some of this
yourself and let us know where you get stuck.

Gary:

I am back :)...

When I try to connect to my default pwa (post 80 site thro internet I get
the following error-

http://<servername>/_layouts/Accessdenied.aspx?Source=%2f

I have not installed DNS or AD or SSL yet on my server.

Please help...With Warm Regards,

Nittinn:

You can't resolve URLs like that through the Internet. You have to provide
an IP address that is exposed to the Internet, or setup a subdomain, DNS,
and SSL for security. That is how this is normally done.

Gary:

Yes Sir, I already have a ip address that is exposed to the Internet thro a
ISP and I have a dedicated server with that ip address on which everything is
installed. So users can log on directly access this server thro internet.

As I had earlier mentioned LAN is not a problem but internet connectivity is.
For Internet I did the following:

1. I went to the Alternate access mapping (AAM) from Operations
2. I selected the default zone URL for which I need to define the AAM using
'Change AAM collection'.
3. I edit this default zone URL and added in Internet zone the URL which the
Users will use to access the site and Saved. So now I have two URLs - Default
and Internet zones
4. I tried to access this server from Internet giving the URL as the one
defined in step 3 against 'Internet zone'.
That is where I get this error-
'http://<servername>/_layouts/Accessdenied.aspx?Source=%2f '

Pls let me know if the steps are correct.

With Warm Regards,

Thanks for all your Help

Since I from Mumbai-India I would appreciate if you could tell me what time
you regularly check these posts with any replies. As it takes 24 hours for
the next action from my side. I will also access around that time IST so that
we can close this asap if it OK with you.

Gary:

One more error,

Today I accessed the server with the Public URL defined in AAM for Internet
Zone

http://<Public URL>/PWA/default.aspx

I got the following error -

Error 503 Service Unavailable from xxx.xxx.x.x

Does this mean my ip address is not configured properly to access from
Internet?

With Warm Regards,

G

Gary L. Chefetz

Nitinn:

I don't believe I'm going to be able to get you through this. I don't
understand your post, as I'd expect the URL that you would be using would
include the IP address as it seems as though you do not have a subdomain or
other FQDN that can resolve from the internet.
