Unable to open files after installing Office 2003

I am unable to open files in Word after installing
Office 2003. This applies to both old files and newly created
files. I can see the file when I do File/Open but
after selecting it I get a Microsoft Word error
saying File not available. This applies to doc, RTF
and txt files. I have no problem creating or saving files.

Please help.

I am on Windows XP Home OS

If you run Detect and Repair (Under Help in any Office Program), does this
still happen?
