Unexpected default calendar result

Hi,

I have tried to change the default settings for my calendar to reflect my
working day (7.30 to 4). I use Tools/Options/Calendar, set up the times and
pressed "set as default". Project Help said that change it so all new
projects are based on this as the default calendar. I understand that to mean
that when I setup my new project and the time frames the default calendar
that pops up will reflect what I set up through Tools/Options.
Unfortunately this does not happen at the moment. I tried to set it up as a
template, thinking I could use that instead, but that didn't work either.
When I went to set up my times (through the wizard) the default working times
were back to 8-5, even though when I checked through the options button
through Tools/Change Working Times, the default was set up how I wanted it
(ie 7.30 to 4 pm). When I changed the working times on the Tools/Change
working times, it then set the calendar to non-default.

Am I missing something? Or is there another setting I need to change? If I
have to change it for every project I set up then there's no point in
creating a template or using the set as default button.

Thanks for reading and any help will be appreciated. It is getting annoying.

The standard calendar is stored in the Global.Mpt file. In your network, is
your PC locked down with read-only rights? if so the global file won't
update. Global.Mpt is in one of your project program folders.

Thanks for replying Rod. I can find the Global.Mpt file but can't open it (I
assume this is normal). I thought that maybe there was a reason that I
couldn't change the global template but I wasn't sure what was stopping it
(maybe a default setting in project put there to protect the new from
changing essential toool etc.). That's why I tried to creat my own template
to base my projects on - exactly as I would do in ms Word if I wanted to
create a standard report format. I thought that I could change and use *its*
default calendar instead, however this gave no joy either.

I know I have been able to do this before using the set as default button
which then changed every new project (obviously made changes to global.mpt),
but then they changed our environment to more locked down. I have elevated
privileges (can down load and update software) but obviously not elevated
enough.

But, I can create and use templates in other MS applications. So I'm
wondering if there's another problem that I'm not familiar enough to see. If
I had the same problems in word I'd find normal.dot (same as global.mpt),
change the file name and then force word to recreate an instance of
normal.dot. Can I do something similar in Project or will I cause all sorts
of drama?

Thanks for your help, I hope we can get to the bottom of this - if I'm not
too clear let me know and I'll see if I can describe it more accurately.

Try copying the Global.Mpt file to your home drive, let's call it H:\

On your desktop create a shortcut to run Project
Right-click the shortcut and click properties
Change the Start in Folder to H:\

Now start Project by double-clicking the shortcut. It will start up using
the Global.Mpt file in H:\

Save your calendar settings then exit project. Re-start Project and you
changes should have stuck.

If you change the number of working hours in a day in your calendar, you
should change the default hours per day in Tools, Options as well, otherwise
a 1d duration won't fill exactly 1 day on the Gantt Chart. Your default
start time in Tools, Options should also be changed to reflect your calendar
start times.

Rod,

Thanks again for your suggestion. I have tried your method and I got the
message "The global template file Global.mpt cannot be opened. You cannot
open the currently active global file" and no instances of project were open.
The odd thing is that when I went through Tools/Options, the working time was
as I set it up and desire it to be AND called it the default, however when I
go through change working times through the wizard it hasn't "stuck". This is
very odd. Is there anywhere else you tink I should look?

Work has a lock down policy for some things (such as my screen saver) but
I'm not sure if it would affect programs that are actually run from my
computer rather than on a network.
