unknown device on serial port (com 1)

I'm not sure if I'm in the correct newsgroup but so far I have received no
responses to my previous postings in other catagories. I'm new to using this
communication service but need some guidance on where I should be posting my
questions so I can get some help.
I have acquired a GPS device but have been unable to download waypoits from
my PC to the GPS device. I keep receiving the message " serial port selected
is receiving data from an unknown device". I have been unable to identify
what else is using the serial port. I have tried downloading to my GPS using
another compyter and it works fine. Therefore the problem is not with the GPS
or the interface cable. I presently run Windows XP Home Edition. Can anyone
help? I have been unable to see where this problem has been addressed
previously in discussion groups. Bill

You might also try going to the website of the company that makes your GPS.
Quite often a manufacturer will post FAQ's on their devices. They would also
be able to tell you if the device works with XP Home Edition.

Although this is not the forum for this, I believe you have to install
the GPS in windows. If a device isn't installed then it will look to
Windows as an unknow device.

Thanx folks for responding. I will try some of the suggestions but at this
time I'm a little scepticle. I have run the GPS on another computer using
Windows XP Home Edition and it downloads information with no problem. The
conflict has to do with my PC. I have tried looking for other drivers but my
system keeps saying I have the most recent driver installed. Anyway, thank
you for taking time to respond.
