Unwanted splits and misplaced inserted tasks

I'm updating a project on EPM server 2007. During that process, numerous
tasks split into a Zero day bar followed by dots that represent the remainder
of the task duration. Checking the "move end of completed parts..." box in
the calculation dialog box did not help. Resource leveling is manual.
Additionally, new tasks, when inserted, go back to the project begin date
and remain there, rather than taking their place in the sequence of tasks
around them. Also, when linked, they take the link, but remain at the
beginning of the project.
Can anyone help?
