upgrade xp pro to 2003 standard

We are developing a game plan to upgrade to Office 2003 at my company. We
have many users who currently have Office XP Pro, and we want to knock them
down to Standard since they do not "truely" need MS Access. Is there a way
that we can deploy the upgrade, and have the install remove Access during the
process? In playing around with it, it appears that the install will leave
Access alone and simply upgrade everything else.

Hi, Mike,

You don't mention how you deployed Office XP, or how you plan to deploy
Office 2003. You might be able to use a two-step process: If you installed
from an administrative installation point, you might run the custom
maintenance wizard for Office XP (from the Office XP Resource Kit) and
remove Access. Then run your Office 2003 standard installation.

Hi Mike,

Yes, you can do that upgrade. A 'default' upgrade
would, as you mentioned, leave behind any Office program
that the new edition did not hold as a replacement but
using a custom installation (manually) you should see
the choice to remove the older program.

For a deployment check the tools and information on
the Custom Installation Wizard for Office 2003 in

Hi Susan. We had already thought about performing an un-install followed by
an install of 2003, but that would not be our first choice. I think that Bob
has steered me in the right direction. thanks.
