vlookup to other files

I have a worksheet that has vlookup formulas that refer to another file. If
this file is a semicolon delimited file, do I have to have it open for my
master sheet to update? What I would like to do is have the files updated
every day, or perhaps every hour so that sales people can open their own file
and have it update.
