Website searches

Web searches don't find my new website. I have read the posts about my site
being to new and I should wait a few months. I'm ok with that. And I found
a post here that said search engines can find information in a picture. That
makes sense too. What about MS Word documents? I have a master copy of a
DOC. This doc. has many tables that I cut and paste into publisher 2003.
Are the words in the word DOC tables searchable on my website or is the table
considered a picture?

Thanks in advance.

If you post the URL to your website maybe we can give you a few ideas.

SE cannot read text in an image.

I'm not sure about them searching within a document...I think not though.

If your table has not been turned into an image then they can be spidered.

The robots that crawl the web for search engine indexing are sometimes
called spiders.

I'm no expert on SEO but;
Your home page should be descriptive *text* about your company and what you
do, as that is what usually shows up in the search results.

If your tables contain text they should be searchable, but if they get
turned into images they won't...like the one on your home page...which imo
shouldn't be there anyway.

Who are you? Where are you? Why should I buy from you?...and How can I buy
from you? - All questions I would have if I found your web site.

How do I know if my tables were turned into images? The table on my homepage
is an image? If so then the rest of them are also. What is IMO?
Thanks for the imput.

easy way to tell is if you can click/drag and highlight the text in your
browser, then it's text...if you can't then it's an image.

IMO= in my opinion

I was not able to select text on my homepage but I was able to select text
on my other pages. So my homepage is an image while my other pages are
searchable? Guess I have some more work to do.
I am interested in everybodies opinions of my website so I can improve it.
I thought a table on the home page showing a couple of the newest releases
or rare toys would draw interest to the rest of the site.
I will add your other suggestions

I'd remove the table on the home page...find some nice high quality images
of your items and put them there instead. Redo the text so it's a general
description of your website's content.

Dan,

I'm no expert on search engine optimization either, but I understand these
days that 'content' is the most important thing....especially on the 'Home'
page. Key words were used at one time to catch the spiders and I think they
still play a part, so you need to make sure that the content of your text
includes some of these 'key' words. These would be words that a viewer would
enter into Google for instance, if browsing for a site of your subject.

One of the best tutorials I found for teaching you how to set out your
content and design is http://webdesignfromscratch.com/ Not only does it
tell you what viewers are looking for in your website, it explains how to
achieve it and more importantly, what not to do.

Getting other people to link into your site can also help....makes the
spiders think your site is good....the more links you have, the quicker they
will pick you up. But it can still take many months.

And.....have you submitted your URL to Google and other search engines? They
may be able to find your site easier if they know you're around. Add yours
to Google here http://www.google.com/addurl/

Hope this helps.

Dan,

To add to what the others have suggested, check the differences in the table
on the home page and one of the other tables to see why one has been
converted to an image. It might be the border...might be the way you pasted
the table into the Pub page...

To use Rob's expression, IMO I think that your ideas of having a few rare
toys or "What's new" on the home page is fine, but not in table form. Use a
larger picture with a better description, and perhaps a link to the page
where the viewer can go get the details and price. Just something to catch
their interest. Just an idea...

And IMO you should not be making the page so wide. Publisher 2007 suggests
either a 760 pixel width or a 984 pixel wide as the widest default size. I
won't belabor the point as how wide to go is debatable, but your page is so
wide it requires horizontal scrolling on my monitor which is something to be
avoided. Here is a reference that you might find helpful: Understanding
background padding in a Publisher web (aka white space) :
http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/archive/2006/01/07/80563.aspx

I see that Maurh has recommended http://webdesignfromscratch.com/ which I
think is very helpful in learning about how to design your site. I would
also recommend http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/ for both entertainment and
learning what not to do.

As to SEO...I don't know much, but I did notice that you have not put any
search engine information in the page. Go to Tools > Web Page Options and
edit the Page title, and the SE information...might help.

I doubt that page, as it is, will ever get found - to a search engine it
will just be a bunch of numbers....no content there at all.

Nor is it a Publisher web page...

I would think that page has a much better chance...but I don't see any meta
tags at all (they really don't matter much these days anyway)
