What causes MS Office files to save as name.docx

I recently installed MS Office and every since then every file saved,
regardless of the Office Program is saved with an "x" as the fourth
character. I can only reopen the files as long as they remain on my PC. If I
send them in email as attachments or publish them to a web site they cannot
be opened; not even my the software my PC.

I have deinstall the software completely and reloaded it but nothing changed.

Any help will be appreciated very much.

..docx is the new Word 2007 file format, and .xlsx is the new Excel 2007
file format. If your email recipients don't have Office 2007 yet, then
you should "save as" to the Word 97-2003 .doc or Excel 97-2003 .xls
format, or your email recipients can install the Office 2007
compatibility pack as described in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=923505 "How to install the Microsoft
Office Compatibility Pack so that you can use earlier versions of Excel,
PowerPoint, and Word to open and to save files from 2007 Office programs".

Garfield, thanks for confirming what I discovered shortly after I requested
assistance. I did not know how to help other to be able to open my files.

Thanks again, and peace be with you and yours......

The defualt save format can be set to the 97-2003 format by clicking the
Office button and then clicking options at the bottom of the menu. Look
for Save. Each Office program can have this option set separately.

I can name several reasons to run Office 2007 but it is nice to know that you speak for the rest of the world.

| Expecting them to load the conversion tool is bad. There is no reason
| to be using Office 2007 with all of its bloat. Office 2003 is more
| than enough for 90% fo the people that use MS Office. Unless you know
| your document is being sent to someone that has Office 2007 you
| should save as office 2003 format by default, each time, or you will
| run into many people that don't find the ROI for office 2007.
