Where does Word application process its document?

Hi, when an end-user is working on Word document from network shared folder,
Word application will process its work on local computer or file server?

An end-user is creating a new Word document and inserting 2-MB .jpe files,
all files from network shared folder, when the file size of Word doc was up
to 150 MB then it did not work any more. Please help me to point out what
would be an impact here?
Thanks very much in advance.

The file must be opened on the local machine. In RAM (which will be
swapped out the the HD eventually, I guess, especially in case of a very
large file).

Probably no connection to local vs. network file. 150 MByte is very huge
for a sensible Word file. Depending on version of Word, there's a limit
of 32 MByte for the _text content_ of a file. You can certainly insert
picture and other objects that are larger. But more often than not,
these pictures take much more space than is sensible (i.e., they can
only be printed by a certain resolution anyway).

So, downsampling the pictures prior to insertion might be a good idea,
and/or inserting the pictures "as links."

Lastly, one might look into the idea of the file itself and come up with
alternatives (different approach, i.e., application).
