Why are pictures I insert invisible?

When I insert pictures into my blank document, they don't show up. The frame
is there, but the image isn't. I tried with both jpg and gif, but neither
shows up. The weird thing is, when I print the document, the picture is
there! What is happening?

I just googled "twonk". It was quite enlightening .
I never knew it could be used like that.
