Why are text shadow options grey? (not available)

I would like to use a text effect. I have selected the text for the effect. I
find text effects under the format tab, but none of the effects other than no
effect can be selected.

Which version of PowerPoint? Are you editing a presentation in 2007, but in
compatibility mode? The new text effects are only available in
PPTX/PPTM/POTX files, not in PPT.
