You need to do a Save As and change the format to a 97-2003 format. The
..docx format is new to Office 2007.

I had no problem until today. All the attachments I send Word 97-2003 and
even PDF show up at the receiver as winmail.dat.
I copied myself and they cam back fine. All 10 receipents could not open
them.
Using Office 2007 and Vista

This is 4-5 years old but should still be valid:

With Outlook ,uncheck the box :"Always send messages in Microsoft
Exchange rich text format."

I delete all winmail.dat files and ask the Outlook sender to change
from Rich Text to Plain Text.
I opened a few and found nothing of use inside.
This will open them if there is anything of use inside.
