Why do periods appear when hitting the space bar in word document

Please e-mail me an answer. I am trying to type a biography for my Psy class
I am trying to type a new document and I can't because everytime I hit the
space bar periods appear. Please help!!!!!!!

Ethel: Those are probably not full-stops but spaces showing up because you
have the display paragraph toggled. Toggle it off.
