Why Does Duration Seem Whacked Out?

T

1. I have subtasks that are supposed to last 7 days each and you
have to finish one to start the next. I have entered actual start
and finish dates on the tasks completed so far. They all took longer
than 7 days. Durations are being generated that seem to make no
sense in relation to the task.

I don't understand where these seemingly whacky Durations are coming
from. Can anyone advise?

2. The next subtask begins today as the last task ended
yesterday. Under Update Tasks/Current, Start is 4/23 which is today
and is correct. Finish is labled as 5/13 and does not have an
option for me to change it. 5/13 is incorrect. Duration is
correctly labled 7 days. Remaining duration is correctly labled 7
days.

What is up with this screwy Finish Date?

TJ Booker,
I doubt that the duration values you are seeing are "whacked". It is
probably a misunderstanding of what duration in Project really means.

First, task duration is the working time (usually in days) between the
task start and the task finish. It is calculated based on the hours per
day setting under Tools/Options/Calendar.

Second, the fact that Project is showing a finish date of 5/13/07 tells
me that you must have a custom calendar since May 13th is a Sunday.

There are several parameters that come in to play when Project
calculates duration, start and finish. But without knowing your custom
settings for working time, hours per day, and perhaps resource working
time, it is difficult to say exactly what is happening in your file.

As a first step, I suggest you go to our MVP website at,
http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm, and take a look at FAQ 5 - Default
Working Hours. That may help explain some of the interactions.

Hello:
My work settings are 27/7/30. Days start at 1201 am. I use no
resources.

I have gone to FAQ 5 and complied with it.

TJ Booker,
Perhaps I'm a little dense today. What is a work setting of 27/7/30? The
fact that your days start at 1201 am doesn't tell us a whole lot other
than the start time. Cryptic information isn't going to help us help
you. How about you tell us what your settings are under Tools/Change
Working Time, under Tools/Options/Calendar tab and your default task
type. Then maybe we can get some insight.
